چکیده

Effective radius re (defined as the ratio of the third to the second moment of a droplet size distribution) is one of the crucial variables that determine the radiative properties of liquid water clouds (Hansen and Travis 1974). The inclusion and parameterization of re in climate models has proven to be critical for assessing global climate change (Slingo 1990; Dandin et al. 1997). There has been increasing evidence for parameterizing re as a 1/3 power law of the ratio of the cloud liquid water content (L) to the droplet concentration (N) (Pontikis and Hicks 1992; Bower and Choularton 1992; Bower et al. 1994; Martin et al. 1994; Liu and Hallett 1997; Reid et al. 1999). The “1/3” power-law takes the form

Dispersion of Cloud Droplet Size Distributions, Cloud Parameterizations and Indirect Aerosol Effects

Most studies of the effect of aerosols on cloud radiative properties have considered only changes in the cloud droplet concentration, neglecting changes in the spectral shape of the cloud droplet size distribution. However, it has been shown that that the spectral dispersion of the cloud droplet size distribution (defined as the ratio of the standard deviation to the mean radius of the droplet ...

Parameterization of cloud droplet size distributions: Comparison with parcel models and observations

[1] This work examines the efficacy of various physically based approaches derived from one-dimensional adiabatic parcel model frameworks (a numerical model and a simplified parameterization) to parameterize the cloud droplet distribution characteristics for computing cloud effective radius and autoconversion rate in regional/global atmospheric models. Evaluations are carried out for integratio...

The impact of smoke from forest fires on the spectral dispersion of cloud droplet size distributions in the Amazonian region

In this paper, the main microphysical characteristics of clouds developing in polluted and clean conditions in the biomass-burning season of the Amazon region are examined, with special attention to the spectral dispersion of the cloud droplet size distribution and its potential impact on climate modeling applications. The dispersion effect has been shown to alter the climate cooling predicted ...

New cloud parameterization with relative dispersion in CAM5.1: model evaluation and impacts on aerosol indirect effects

Aerosol-induced increase of relative dispersion of cloud droplet size distribution ε exerts a warming effect and partly offsets the cooling of aerosol indirect radiative forcing (AIF) associated with increased droplet concentration by increasing the cloud droplet effective radius (Re) and enhancing the cloud-to-rain autoconversion rate (Au) (labeled as dispersion effect), which can help reconci...
